The Providence of the Pit
Whatever our dreams, in time we’ll most likely find that parts of them intertwine and overlap with the dreams of others. In fact, the bigger the dream, the more parties it may take to accomplish it. The pit experience purifies us to be open to this team concept.
Note how Jesus prayed: “Father, I pray that all people who believe in me can be one. You are in me and I am in you. I pray that these people can also be one in us, so that the world will believe that you sent me” (John 17:21 ICB).
God’s heart for unity is a resounding theme throughout Scripture, so why would it strike us as odd that He wants this unity when it comes to fulfilling our dreams? Almost no accomplishment of a grand magnitude is a solo effort. Even now I’m thinking of two people who are laboring with me on this book to make my dream of sharing truth with others a reality. They, too, have been given dreams by God, and some of those dreams complement my own. In our joint effort, I contribute the bone and marrow, and they put on the muscle and sinew. Together we do what none of us could do alone.
Other people are being prepared by God to assist us with our dreams because that’s the way God orchestrates and coordinates His body. Think about all the things you, personally, have accomplished in your life and how God used others to come alongside you to help fulfill your dream. For fun, track the miracles of the Bible and see how many of them required the participation of more than just one individual.
That’s why when we share our dreams with arrogance, pride, and self-centeredness, in an attitude of “I don’t need anybody else to make my dream happen,” we could very well be alienating the people God has chosen to help us. If we approach our dreams this way, we shouldn’t be surprised when we end up in a pit for a time of purification.
If you’re in the pit with your dream right now, I hope you’ve felt the encouragement of this chapter. The pit is not a time for us to be pitiful; it’s a time for us to be purified. God wants to get rid of the dross of pride in our hearts so we’ll share heaven’s dreams for our lives with the passion that attracts others like a magnet.
The Enemy’s tactic is to stoke our pride and isolate us, like the wolf that draws the sheep away from the flock. God’s solution is for us to get together with other brothers and sisters—those who have pure hearts, who are not double-minded but fixed upon God—and let their fire and enthusiasm energize our dreams.
Perhaps this book is what God designed to pull you out of your pit. You have a choice at this point. You can put the book down, return to your “pit-y” party and say, “That’s not
